Arrival in Altamura — Welcome to Puglia

The journey begins with arrival in Altamura, a thousand-year-old city in the heart of the Bari Murgia. After the transfer from the airport and check-in at the 4-star hotel, the evening opens with a welcome dinner that is already an immersion in the region’s gastronomic culture. Altamura is world-famous for its DOP bread, but the local cuisine goes far beyond that: fresh cheeses, orecchiette, Murgia lamb, and robust wines like Primitivo set the stage for a gastronomic journey of great intensity.

The first evening is intentionally free from physical activities: it is the time to settle in, get to know the group, and breathe in the unique atmosphere of this white-stone city that smells of wheat and antiquity. In the afternoon, you will meet our bike tour guides for a short briefing on the trip and try out the bicycles so that everything is ready for the first ride the next day.

Altamura & the Pulo — Loop Tour by E-Bike + Bakery Visit

🚴 Loop E-Bike Tour to the Pulo

~31 km | +280 m elevation gain

After a short guided walking tour of the old town of Altamura, we will set off on the first E-Bike tour. A perfect introduction to the Murgia landscape: we start from Altamura’s historic center for a panoramic loop that leads to the Pulo di Altamura, one of the most spectacular karst sinkholes in Italy. This natural sinkhole, over 550 meters in diameter and 90 meters deep, is a truly remarkable geological and natural spectacle, surrounded by olive trees, wild herbs, and the silence of the Murgia. The route winds through wheat fields and Mediterranean scrub. The electric assistance of the bike makes the climbs almost imperceptible, allowing everyone to enjoy the landscape without effort. The tour includes a delicious picnic immersed in nature, with selected local products.

🍞 Afternoon Food: Historic Bakery & Dinner

In the afternoon, return to the hotel, relax, and then the group will visit one of the ancient bakeries in Altamura’s historic center, where bakers still preserve the tradition of DOP bread baked in a wood-fired oven today. A deeply sensory experience: the smell of grain, the heat of the oven, the skilled hands of the bakers.

  • Guided visit to a historic bakery
  • Tasting of Altamura DOP bread

Bauxite Mines & Castel del Monte — The Aqueduct Cycle Route

🚴 Technical Data: ~30 km | +275 m elevation gain

This stage is one of the most exciting of the entire tour: you ride along the Apulian Aqueduct Cycle Route, one of the most scenic cycling routes in Southern Italy, following the route of the great aqueduct that brings water to the cities of Puglia. The starting point is the surreal landscape of the Spinazzola Bauxite Mines, where rainwater has transformed the abandoned quarries into lakes of intense red-orange, creating an almost alien landscape of great visual impact. The contrast between the red of the bauxite, the green of the Mediterranean scrub, and the Apulian blue sky is an unmissable photographic spectacle.

The cycle route winds through open and silent landscapes, with endless views across the Murgia. The arrival at the octagonal Castel del Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an absolute symbol of Puglia, delivers an unmatched thrill. In the afternoon, after lunch, the group visits the castle with an expert guide who will reveal the mysteries of its perfect geometry and the history of Emperor Frederick II.

🔴 Spinazzola Bauxite Mines

Spectacular geosite, a landscape perfect for nature photography and geological discovery.

🚿 Apulian Aqueduct Cycle Route

🏰 Castel del Monte UNESCO

Gravina in Puglia → Poggiorsini — Murgia & Mozzarella

🚴 E-Bike Tour: ~28 km | +231 m

After a short bus transfer and a visit to the magnificent historic center of Gravina in Puglia — famous for its Roman aqueduct bridge and medieval cathedral — the group hops on their E-Bikes for one of the most scenic stages of the tour. The ride takes place at the foot of the Cliff of the Alta Murgia National Park, a limestone escarpment that dominates the landscape with its ancient grandeur. It is a stage that offers a sense of total freedom: the wind, the silence, the scent of the scrubland, and the gentle rhythm of cycling create a meditative and rejuvenating experience.

🧀 Mozzarella Making Workshop in a Masseria

At the end of the bike tour, the bus takes the group to a typical farm where a master cheesemaker will teach the art of fresh mozzarella. Hands in warm water, stretching, knotting: a hands-on and convivial experience that ends with lunch at the masseria featuring the freshly made cheeses and the authentic flavors of Puglian peasant cuisine.

  • Hands-on mozzarella making workshop
  • Lunch at the masseria with local products
  • Guided visit to Gravina in Puglia

Free Day & Matera — Sassi, Cuisine, and Lucanian Flavors

☀️ Day 5 — Free Day

A refreshing break in the middle of the journey. The free day is a precious gift: some may want to explore Altamura’s historic center on their own, some may enjoy a spa or relax at the hotel, some may want to discover the local markets or shop among typical regional products. The area offers endless possibilities for those who want to explore freely. It is also possible to take a train to Bari and visit the capital of Puglia.

🏛️ Day 6 — Matera: Cooking Class & Sassi

Matera is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the world, European Capital of Culture 2019 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guided visit to the Sassi — the ancient cave districts carved into the rock — is an experience that is not easily forgotten: winding alleys, rock churches, breathtaking views over the canyons. The day is enriched with a cooking class where you will learn the secrets of Lucanian cuisine: from handmade pasta to traditional sauces, from rustic desserts to dishes rooted in peasant history. A total immersion in the gastronomic and cultural heritage of Southern Italy.

Bosco Scoparella & Wine Tasting — The Final Tour on Two Wheels

🚴 Technical Data: ~22 km | +135 m of elevation gain

The last E-Bike tour is the gentlest and most relaxing of the entire trip: we cycle through Bosco Scoparella, a green oasis in the heart of the Murgia where oaks, holm oaks, and Mediterranean scrub create a natural corridor of extraordinary beauty. The green heart of the Alta Murgia National Park offers shade, fragrances, and that deep peace only ancient woods can provide. The route passes by Jazzo del Demonio, an ancient farmstead for pastoral life wrapped in legends and history, a true symbol of Murgian civilization.

The stage ends ideally with a visit to Ruvo di Puglia, an elegant town with its Romanesque cathedral and the Jatta Museum. The day concludes with a wine tasting at a selected winery, where wines from the Murge — from Nero di Troia to Primitivo — will be tasted, accompanied by a light tasting of local products. The glass raised at sunset over Apulia is the perfect toast to the end of an unforgettable journey.
