Meeting and departure from Matera, we will cycle towards Altamura, one of the most significant towns in the National Park. Its historic center is a maze of narrow streets and small courtyards called claustri, enriched by the majestic Federician Cathedral.

After passing through the heart of the city, we will continue towards the Pulo di Altamura, one of the most important geosites in the protected area. You might be wondering what it is: at first glance, it may look like a meteorite crater, but the reality is quite different! We won’t spoil the surprise—you’ll have to see it for yourself.

Following a relaxing picnic lunch, we will set off again towards one of the oldest and most fascinating towns in the area: Gravina in Puglia. This historic center, built entirely from calcarenite—a local yellowish stone—overlooks a canyon, creating a breathtaking fusion of human craftsmanship and natural beauty. In addition to its remarkable historical buildings, Gravina was the birthplace of a Pope and hides another city beneath its surface: the intriguing Underground Gravina, which is optional to visit.

Once we arrive in Gravina in Puglia, those who reached the starting point by car will be transported back to Matera to retrieve their vehicles.

Useful tips to better enjoy your cycling adventure:

  • Dress in sportswear…avoid wearing jeans. They are very uncomfortable.
  • Equip yourself with a k-way and a spare t-shirt. You never know.
  • If you have cycling shorts, those with a padded seat, use them!
  • A good hat is suggested in order to protect your head from the strong sun.
  • Remember to bring a small backpack to carry water and a self-prepared snack.
  • Remember to bring a good supply of water, at least one liter.
  • A good pair of sunglasses can protect your eyes from the sun as well as the unpleasant inconvenience of bugs in your eyes as you are cycling around.
